KILMARNOCK TOWNSCAPE HERITAGE INITIATIVE

The John Finnie Street and Bank Street Outstanding Conservation Area comprises of the surviving historic core of Kilmarnock and the majority of the town centre. It includes some 270 properties of mixed styles but also 68 listed properties.

The conservation team of accredited architects in Austin-Smith:Lord, Glasgow were commissioned by East Ayrshire Council to carry out comprehensive studies and conservation area appraisals in Kilmarnock and nearby Catrine.

They assisted the Council in securing CARS Grant support from Historic Scotland for Kilmarnock, and then went on to secure Stage 1 THI funding from the HLF. They are currently assisting the Council in the submission of the Stage 2THI Application. As part of the CARS work the team wrote and published a Conservation Area Maintenance Guide. The booklet provides concise and straightforward advice on carrying out repairs and maintenance to historic fabric. The publication has just been awarded overall winner in the Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning supported by Scottish Government and RTPI.
