Restoration of Garrison House and Grounds

Restoration of Garrison House and Grounds
ASA Listed Building 2008 Lee Boyd Architects are proud to have been involved with the Garrison House project over the last 5 years. The project was formally opened on the 10th of March 2008 by the Scottish Regional Manager for the Heritage Lottery Fund and is now being enjoyed by the people of Millport and visitors to the island of Cumbrae.

Garrison House, a £4.1m HLF funded project, is the complete restoration and rejuvenation of a derelict grade B listed historic building, very much at the heart of the island community. Almost destroyed by fire in 2001, the project is a combination of conservation and contemporary intervention to provide a mixed use public facility including museum, library, surgery and cafe.

They key challenge of the project was to address the issue of how our built heritage can be allowed to adapt and change to accommodate contemporary expectations without eroding the essential period character. Whilst the exterior is almost completely restored, the interiors are bold and open plan appropriate to the perception of an inclusive public building.
