Edinburgh University graduate wins RIAS Silver Medal and Drawing Prize

The Lighthouse has announced the winners of the 2006 SIX student architecture awards. The £1,200 RIAS Silver Medal for a 5th year student went to David Eland of Edinburgh University for “a robust and thoughtful” project focusing on the potential development of Fort Ricasoli, an abandoned fortification at the entrance to the grand harbour, Valetta in Malta. Eland also picked up a second Award for the project, the £1,000 RIAS Award for Drawing: his portfolio showing a balance of photography, computer modelling, sketches and graphics that perfectly evoked the spirit of the site. Open to architecture students from all Scotland’s Schools of Architecture, the SIX Architecture Awards are presented annually as part of The Lighthouse’s National Programme for Architecture.The £1,000 Urban Design Award is shared by four students also from Edinburgh University: Daniel Burt, Samuel Dawkins, Benjamin Olschner and William Pang Wang. The £800 Lighthouse Best 3rd Year Prize was awarded to Richard Bevan of Edinburgh College of Art for his design for a primary school on the edge of Craigmillar. The £500 Sust. Award for Sustainable design was won by Stuart Falconer of Strathclyde for proposals for the reuse of an old modernist car park in Cumbernauld as a place of social interaction – a place were energy produced equals or exceeds the amount consumed.
