Aedas’s Manchester Academy opens doors

The new, £14.5million, Manchester Academy, designed by architect Aedas, has just opened its doors. Built on the site of the former Ducie High School in Moss Side, the new three-storey school will accommodate 900 pupils.

The building is clad in pre-painted copper sheeting, with individual wings radiating from a central social space. The school has been designed using the four points of the compass, with each area having its own house social areas.
Project architect Imran Kassim said: “To break down the scale of the building, and make it more child-friendly, the design incorporates a variety of materials which also delineate the various functional elements of the school. We were also keen to emphasises the strong focus on the pastoral system, and provide social spaces for pupils throughout the space.”
