Plans for £70million waterside development

Property developer ISIS Waterside Regeneration has submitted plans for a mixed-use canal-side scheme at the gateway to New Islington – Manchester’s Millennium Community. A detailed planning application has been submitted for Phase 1 of the Islington Wharf scheme, designed by architect Broadway Malyan, which includes 200 one, two and three-bedroom apartments and two leisure units. A 21-storey building in sandstone and copper will feature winter gardens and a ground-floor restaurant and bar. There will also be a further four residential buildings.

The scheme, bordered by the Ashton Canal, also aims to secure outline permission for a further 341 apartments, a food retail store and additional niche retail and leisure units. An alternative scheme for a 100-bedroom hotel within a later phase has also been submitted. Improvements will be made to the public realm, including enhancing pedestrian access along the canal under Great Ancoats Street and the re-opening of access along the Islington Arm of the Ashton Canal.
ISIS hopes the scheme will attract owner-occupiers and first-time buyers.
Matt Brook, at Broadway Malyan, said: “The main 21-storey landmark tower forms a red sandstone shard, an outcrop from Manchester’s sandstone bedrock. The splayed sandstone shards also provide all apartments in the tower with south facing corner views towards the canal basin.”

Work should begin on site in late summer with Phase 1 expected to take two years to complete.
