Hoskins the only Scot on Glasgow museum list

Gareth Hoskins Architects is the only Scottish contender on the shortlist to design the £50 million Riverside Museum in Glasgow, the replacement for the Transport Museum. The other seven are big-name firms from England or Europe: Daniel Libeskind, Zaha Hadid, Will Alsop, Foster and Partners, Richard Rogers, Grimshaw Architects and Pringle Richards Sharratt. The shortlist was chosen by Glasgow City Council from a list of 44.
The new museum will be located at the site where the River Kelvin meets the River Clyde, adjacent to Glasgow Harbour, and is scheduled to open in 2009. The eight practices will submit design proposals by the middle of September, with interviews shortly afterwards. A final decision should be taken by the end of the year.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council described the brief as ‘fairly wide’. Architects have been asked to work within the urban context of the Glasgow Harbour masterplan and to ensure that the scheme addresses the river. There will be no temporary exhibition space, so the design will need to be flexible to accommodate changes to the permanent collection.
Gareth Hoskins was delighted to be involved. “We’re thrilled and think we have an exciting idea. It is interesting to see the big names on the list, and we will certainly give them a run for their money.” Six teams will also compete for the exhibition design: Casson Mann, Event Communications, Haley Sharp, Ralph Appelbaum, MET Studios and Graven Images.
