Arts complex for Clitheroe
Lancashire architects IWA, in collaboration with Max Fordham, Whitby Bird and Colin Buchanan, have completed a feasibility study for the St Mary’s Centre in Clitheroe. The brief is to provide an arts complex with cinemas and a theatre, dance studios, a community resource centre, restaurants and retail units in a town which has not had a new public building for 30 years. The project will be inserted within the town fabric whilst accommodating a 10m change between Church Street and York Street.
The design, which will cost around £8m, aims to retain the best of the existing building, use vernacular materials in a contemporary manner, and provide an icon for the town. Consultations with local residents and authorities have already begun.
