Executive unveils blueprint for Scottish architecture

The Scottish Executive’s aspirations for the future of the nation’s architecture have been unveiled by Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson.

In a document titled Building Our Legacy – an update of the 2001 publication – the strategy outlines five key objectives aimed at improving the quality and legacy of Scottish Architecture.

The strategy aims to encourage better, more enduring design; to provide adequate support, skills and tools; to encourage a better understanding and harmony between old and new built heritage and to stimulate a cultural climate which values architecture and lasting, accessible design.

Ms Ferguson said: “I am extremely optimistic about the continuing achievements of Scottish architecture and can see growing international recognition of the strength of recent Scottish projects.”

The Maggie’s cancer caring centres, The Bridge in Easterhouse and the Shetland Museum and Archives were cited as positive examples of recent Scottish design.
