Glasgow tipped as Commonwealth 2014 favourite
12 Mar 2007
Glasgow has been tipped as the favourite to host the 2014 Commonwealth games, following the withdrawal of Canadian city Halifax amid budget concerns.
The city's budget went $1 billion over the original estimate, so the race is now between Glasgow and the Nigerian city of Abuja.
Leader of Glasgow City Council, Steven Purcell, said: "One of the strengths of our bid is that the vast majority of infrastructure and facilities we need are already committed or in place" and that Glasgow had a "track record" in hosting sporting events.
The winner will be announced in November.
