Work is due to begin later this month on the £30 million expansion at Glasgow Airport, dubbed the "skyhub" project.

In a move that will see the largest single investment in the airport for over a decade, the new two-storey extension will house the airport's new passenger security area - replacing the current three areas- as well as new shops, bars and cafes.

Many of the new facilities will be accessible only to passengers who have already gone through security checks, which airport management has described as a reflection of passengers' needs for increased security measures.

BAA Scotland (British Airports Authority) is said to be considering cladding the new building in translucent panels, lit with changing colours. A BAA spokesmand said: "We are looking at a number of design options...There will be a big focus on harnessing natural light to create a bright, welcoming environment and reduce energy use.

The plans have come under attack from environmental groups for encouraging aviation expansion, potentially trebling passenger numbers and increasing carbon emissions.
