Work has begun on the £100 million redevelopment of Glasgow's St Enoch Centre.

Demolition work started yesterday at the former Clydesdale Bank site on the corner of Argyll Street and St Enoch Square. The site will form the new entrance to the shopping centre, capitalising on its proximity to St Enoch underground station as well as Argyll Street and Buchanan Street shoppers.

The development will mean a refurbishment of the existing site as well as an expansion taking the centre to over one million square feet, boasting new shops, bars, leisure facilities, restaurants and a plaza-style upgrade for St Enoch Square.

Claude Dion, of St Enoch's Montreal-based owners Ivanhoe Cambridge, said: "The city of Glasgow already enjoys an excellent profile as a 'must-see' shopping destination, but we see enormous potential in the centre and the surrounding St Enoch Square area."

The project is due for completion in 2009.
