Government hints at future for Stranraer casino

The Government has said that plans for a casino in Stranraer may still go ahead, despite the Prime Minister's call for a report on the "social effects" of gambling.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said he received assurances about the future of the Stranraer casino, implying that the smaller casinos were not the problem.

Mr Brown said: "The super-casino is undoubtedly the issue...It is really, I think, about the department of culture, media and sport settling down to look at how it can separate that one super-casino away from the other 16, keeping in mind it was a UK-wide project that was being looked at."

If plans go forward, the casino would hold up to 80 gaming machines with a maximum jackpot of £4,000.
