Prospect will be hosting a special debate on housing during the Edinburgh Festival to coincide with the Test of Time, Saltire Housing exhibition at ECA. The speakers are Lynsey Hanley, author of Estates (2007), the controversial book about growing up in a post-war council estate outside Birmingham, Miles Glendinning, co-author of Tower Block (1994), Diane Watters, co-author of Little Houses (2006) and Alan Pert, SDA Architect of the Year.

The debate will look at contemporary attitudes to social housing built in post-war . Much of this housing stock is currently being demolished and replaced. Is this a genuine response to real shifts in contemporary needs and aspiration or a knee-jerk reactions to compensate for the failures of Welfarism?

The debate will take place on Wednesday 22 August at 6pm at Edinburgh College of Art. Tickets cost £20 (£10 concessions) and can be booked from the Saltire Society 0131-556-1836 between 10 am and 4 pm.

If you have any views on this or any other issue raised on the Prospect website, join the debate in the Forum.
