SIX award winners announced

The SIX Architecture Awards were presented at Glasgow’s The Lighthouse last Friday.

The annual event judges work by students from Scotland’s six schools of architecture.

Strathclyde University graduate Liam Madden won both the RIAS Silver Medal for best fifth year project and the SUST Award for his proposals for the development of a new textile mill and an associated masterplan for the Condoratt area of Cumbernauld.

Madden said: “I see the mill as the keystone of a strategy to redevelop the area. Currently, clear boundaries exist between the edge of the town and its rural hinderland, but by redeveloping the area it will be possible to reconnect the town’s resident population with the landscape on which it has historically relied.”

Now with Rick Mather Architects, Mackintosh School of Architecture graduate Paul Taylor took the RIAS Drawing Award for his proposals for a specially created cemetery, crematorium and memorial – the Glasgow Death Compendium - as well as a commendation for the Silver Medal.

George Woodrow of Edinburgh University won The Lighthouse third Year Student Award, while the Urban Design prize was not awarded.
