Calderwood, is a proposed new settlement on the periphery of Edinburgh, and developer Stirling Developments is in the final stages of preparing an outline planning application for the project. Stirling Developments recently ran a design workshop to get input from emerging practices on the design of new housing neighbourhoods.

Graeme Massie, GRAS, JM Architects, Make, Paterson Architects, Studio KAP, Sutherland and Hussey and WT Architecture all participated in the project. Each was invited to look at an area of the proposed master plan and to design one small neighbourhood looking at both individual houses and housing layout.

At the end of the project Stirling Developments selected four winners – Graeme Massie, Paterson Architects, Studio KAP and WT Architecture (William Tunnell’s practice). Each winning team received a £1000 prize. Stirling plan to lodge the planning application for the settlement in Spring 2008.
