Glasgow Greenlights City Business Hotel

Glasgow City Council have granted Planning Consent for a new Hotel to be constructed adjacent to Glasgow’s Central Station, to include a landmark tower visible from many points to the south of the River Clyde.

The 1960’s office block currently onsite will be demolished and the entire site redeveloped to a height of to 20 storeys, which will contain a Staybridge Suite medium stay business market hotel. It will comprise 119 units including a mix of studio suites and one bedroom suites. These suites will provide self-catering kitchen and dining areas in addition to the bedroom and en-suite bathrooms. The development will include a ground floor reception area and a guest only dining and bar area at first floor level with a multi-gym and laundry facility on the ninth floor.

The external elevations comprise a mixture of glass curtain walling and aluminium cladding. The aluminium cladding will frame the glass elements and form an elevated fin roof with a distinctive feature soffit. The curtain wall elements incorporate a palette of red coloured glass in three shades reflecting the hues of the red sandstone Listed Building to the north. The density of the red panels decreases with height as the glass tower rises above the adjacent buildings. Some of the red panels will be internally illuminated and together with illumination of the soffit roof feature will add interest to the night time architecture.

The scheme is intended to contribute to the regeneration of the St. Enoch area of Glasgow City Centre. It will compliment other hotels recently completed in the local area. The regeneration of the area is already underway with the development of other landmark buildings of similar scale and this will add a further distinctive element into this context.
