A consultation published by the Scottish Government has proposed designating certain neighbourhoods within Glasgow and Edinburgh as 'quiet areas', where city planners will be obliged to ban any noisy developments.

Following the production of noise maps available online, additional candidate noise management areas are proposed, together with the quiet zones, which are comprised mostly of parks and other woodland areas.

"As well as being deeply annoying for all concerned, excessive noise can have serious side effects" said Environment Minister Michael Russell.

"It is often referred to as the forgotten pollutant, but the Scottish Government is determined to do more to highlight and therefore deal with it."
