Scotsman Steps spiral of decline halted

Plans for a £150k refurbishment of The Scotsman Steps in Edinburgh are being considered by Edinburgh City Council’s Transport Infrastructure and Environment Committee.

The stairwell was constructed in 1899 to a French style and connect the North Bridge to Market Street by way of a tiled octagonal spiral stair.

Proposed works would seek to have stonework repaired, paint and cement removed, broken tiles replaced, new lighting provided, and new decorative gates installed. Opening hours, cleaning, maintenance, policing and control of anti-social behaviour will also be assessed to prevent recurrence of present circumstance.

David McDonald of Edinburgh World Heritage said: “If they were in better condition then more people would use them, which in turn would add a self-policing element to the space.   The Scotsman Steps are a great shortcut for locals and also shape many visitors first impressions of the city.”
