Caledonian lured to rising sun of the east

Glasgow Caledonian University is considering moves to relocate its entire campus, staff and students to the city's east end.

The move aims to capitalise on regeneration efforts being undertaken in the area following announcement of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games win.  The institution also stands to benefit financially from the sale of its city centre campus.

University Principal Pamela Gillies said the move would “be a wonderful opportunity to re-conceive the way the university uses its academic expertise to support social and economic regeneration.”

Counting against any move would be the millions of pounds spent by the university in recent years upon their existing estate.  Inefficient use of public money arising from a lack of forward planning doesn’t reflect well on management.

The move follows plans for an amalgamated “supercampus” catering for some 46,000 students drawn from the Metropolitan College, Central College of Commerce and Stow College on a site at Cathedral Street between Strathclyde and Caledonian Universities.
