7 Apr 2006

Glasgow School of Art has won a Stage 1 grant of £4.6 million and a development grant of £153,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to revamp the Mackintosh building. Page\\Park Architects and ZM Architecture have been appointed to convert the building back to its original condition, removing partitions, screens and floors inserted in the 1970s and to create new visitor facilities. Meanwhile, David Porter, the head of GSA’s architecture department, has been lobbying architects to support plans to demolish buildings opposite the Mackintosh building. Historic Scotland has threatened to spot list the buildings surrounding the GSA building on the grounds that they are significant in that they were designed in response to the Mackintosh building.
